Thai Yoga Massage – the ancient art of healing touch.

A treatment form 2,500 years old from Thailand: precise acupressure, guided stretches and work along the energy lines (sen). Deep relaxation meets physical mobilization – fully clothed, on a mat.

"The hands read the body – and respond with movement, pressure and space."

What is Thai Yoga Massage?

Thai Yoga Massage – in Thai Nuad Thai or Nuad Bo Rarn – is an independent treatment form from the traditional medical system of Thailand. It combines three roots: the Indian yoga tradition with its stretches and breath work, the Buddhist practice of mindful touch, and Thai healing knowledge of the body's energy lines.

Unlike classical Western massage, the treatment takes place on a floor mat, in comfortable loose clothing – no oil, no table. Therapist and patient move together through a sequence of precisely applied pressure, guided stretches and calm transitions. The treatment can be deeply relaxing or physically mobilizing – depending on the assessment.

Three building blocks of the treatment

  • Acupressure along the ten main energy lines (sen sib). Points are specifically stimulated with thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet.
  • Guided stretches – yoga-like positions you are passively guided into. The body opens step by step, without effort.
  • Breath and rhythm work – the therapist works in the rhythm of your breath. This creates a meditative quality that helps regulate body and nervous system.

EMR recognition

Thai Yoga Massage is listed in Switzerland with the Erfahrungsmedizinisches Register (EMR) as a recognized complementary medicine method. Treatments by an EMR-recognized therapist are covered by many health insurers via supplementary insurance (complementary medicine) – the exact reimbursement depends on your individual policy.

How Thai Yoga Massage works

Three principles working together.

The treatment combines pressure, stretch and rhythmic movement in a slow, steady rhythm – so your body can relax without effort.

Pressure

Targeted, calm pressure along the energy lines (sen) helps release tense muscles, stimulate circulation and reduce pain.

Stretch

Guided, passive stretches improve mobility and flexibility – without active effort on your part. The body opens naturally.

Rhythmic movement

Gentle, rhythmic rocking and mobilisation calms the nervous system and leads into a state of deep relaxation – physically and mentally.

Indications

What is Thai Yoga Massage used for?

Particularly valuable when tensions cannot be clearly localised or when physical and emotional stress overlap.

Neck, shoulder & back tension

Chronic muscle tension from stress, desk posture or one-sided load releases through targeted pressure and guided stretches.

Tension headaches

Stress- and tension-related headaches, often linked to neck tension – relief through work on the shoulder-neck axis and jaw.

Reduced mobility

Movement stiffness and reduced flexibility improve through guided stretches the body cannot initiate on its own.

Sleep disorders

Trouble falling and staying asleep improves through strong calming of the nervous system – often noticeable after the first session.

Stress & burnout

For autonomic dysregulation and exhaustion the treatment works on the deep regulatory level, helping to leave "flight mode".

Sporting load

Regular accompaniment with sporting load speeds recovery, prevents injury and improves movement economy.

Desk work & one-sided posture

Ideal for people who spend many hours sitting – targeted work against the typical muscular imbalances.

Energetic exhaustion

When the body "can no longer let go" – deep relaxation as a gentle reset for the whole system.

Prevention & self-care

Regular maintenance of mobility and the nervous system – treat yourself before you need to.

Thai Yoga Massage does not replace conventional medical diagnosis. For acute complaints, fresh injuries, early pregnancy or certain pre-existing conditions we carefully clarify the indication beforehand.

Women's Health

Thai Yoga Massage in special life phases.

Pregnancy and postpartum fundamentally change the body – our treatments adapt with care, safety and sensitivity.

Prenatal Thai Yoga Massage

Gentle support during pregnancy (from the 2nd trimester) for lower back and hip tension. Supports circulation, relaxation and emotional balance – with adapted side positioning.

Postnatal Thai Yoga Massage

Recovery after birth: relaxation and regeneration, reconnection with the body and rebalancing the nervous system. With special consideration for breastfeeding and pelvic floor.

Midlife transition

In hormonal transition phases (perimenopause, menopause) the treatment helps release tension, regulate the nervous system and improve sleep quality.

How does a treatment work?

01

Initial conversation

15 minutes at the start of the first session. Current complaints, physical history, mobility restrictions, expectations. We clarify what works for you today – and what we avoid.

02

Treatment on the mat

60 or 90 minutes. You stay in comfortable clothing (long trousers, T-shirt, socks). We work in a quiet, established sequence that combines acupressure and passive stretching. You set pace and depth at any time.

03

Aftercare

A few minutes of rest after the treatment. Drink some water, settle back into yourself. After a first treatment, the body may respond with light muscle soreness the next day – this subsides quickly.

04

Follow-up sessions

Depending on the concern, 1–2 times a month or as needed. For chronic topics we recommend a closer rhythm at the start, with longer intervals afterwards.

What to bring

  • Comfortable, stretchy clothing (long trousers and T-shirt, sports clothes welcome).
  • Clean socks – shoes are taken off outside the treatment room.
  • Insurance card and, if applicable, supplementary insurance policy.
  • A list of medications you take, if relevant.
  • Current medical reports for ongoing treatments.
  • Ideally not on a fully empty or full stomach – a light snack beforehand is fine.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Thai Yoga Massage.

I'm not sure where to start – what can I do?+
Book a free 15-minute orientation call – by phone or in person. We listen briefly, answer your open questions and find together the right session length (60, 75 or 90 minutes) for your concern. No pressure, no commitment.
Is Thai Yoga Massage covered by health insurance?+
Usually via supplementary insurance (complementary medicine), as our therapist is EMR-recognized. The share and number of sessions per year covered depend on your individual policy.
What should I wear?+
Comfortable, stretchy clothing – long trousers and T-shirt or sports clothes. You stay fully clothed throughout the treatment. Bring clean socks.
Does the treatment hurt?+
It should not hurt. Some acupressure points can be briefly intense, but you set the pace and depth at any time. Light muscle soreness the next day is normal after a first treatment – a sign the body has worked.
How does Thai Yoga Massage differ from a Swedish massage?+
Swedish massage primarily works with strokes and kneading on oiled muscle, on a table. Thai Yoga Massage takes place on a mat, in clothing, without oil, combining acupressure with passive yoga-like stretches. Both methods are valuable but address different issues.
How often should I come?+
For acute tension or complaints we recommend 3–4 sessions at fortnightly intervals first, then longer intervals. For maintenance and prevention a monthly session is often enough.
Is Thai Yoga Massage possible during pregnancy?+
Not in early pregnancy (first trimester). From the second trimester, adapted treatments are possible – we adjust positioning, avoid certain points and work more gently. Please discuss with us beforehand.
Do I need a referral?+
No. You can book an appointment directly. For ongoing treatments, please bring current reports.
