Ayurveda – the science of life.

A medical system more than 3,000 years old, looking at body, mind and life circumstances together. Constitution-based diagnostics, individual dietary and lifestyle counselling, gentle phytotherapy and external applications.

"Health is not the absence of disease – it is a living balance."

What is Ayurvedic Medicine?

Ayurveda (Sanskrit: ayur – life, veda – knowledge) is one of the world's oldest documented medical systems. It emerged more than three millennia ago on the Indian subcontinent and is recognized in Switzerland as complementary medicine, covered by health insurers via supplementary policies.

At its core, Ayurveda views health as a dynamic balance between body, mind and life circumstances. Complaints arise when this balance is disturbed – through diet, stress, lack of sleep, life phases or unprocessed stress. Therapy works accordingly: not just on the symptom, but on the conditions that produce it.

The three Doshas

Ayurveda describes three body-mind forces – the Doshas – which are weighted differently in each person and define your individual constitution (Prakriti):

  • Vata – movement. Governs breath, nervous system, circulation, mental agility.
  • Pitta – transformation. Governs digestion, metabolism, warmth, clarity and decision.
  • Kapha – stability. Governs structure, immunity, sleep, rest and consistency.

When the Doshas are in balance, the constitution is stable. When they shift (Vikriti), complaints arise – sometimes subtly over years, sometimes acutely. A central aim of ayurvedic treatment is to recognise this shift and gently correct it.

Four pillars of treatment

  • Nutrition – tailored to constitution, time of day, season and life phase.
  • Lifestyle (Dinacharya) – daily rhythm, sleep, movement, breath work.
  • Phytotherapy – selected herbal remedies, from single herbs to classical formulations.
  • External applications – oil massages, forehead pourings (Shirodhara), herbal stamp treatments, sweat applications.

Indications

What is Ayurveda used for?

Ayurveda is particularly effective for complaints connected to diet, lifestyle and stress – the areas where conventional medicine often only addresses the symptom, not the life context that produces it.

Stress & burnout

Effective support with chronic stress, inner restlessness and exhaustion syndromes – through nervous-system regulation, nutrition and daily routines.

Digestion & metabolism

For irritable bowel, chronic bloating, heartburn or unclear functional complaints – by strengthening Agni (the digestive fire).

Hormonal balance

For PMS, cycle irregularities, menopausal symptoms or thyroid issues – with type-appropriate nutrition, routines and herbs.

Back, neck & joint pain

Natural relief for chronic tension and pain via external applications, movement advice and inflammation-modulating nutrition.

Sleep disorders

Calming the nervous system, healthy day-night rhythms and routines that sustainably support falling asleep and staying asleep.

Mental & emotional health

Support with anxiety, overwhelm and mental exhaustion – building resilience through breath work, self-care and phytotherapy.

Skin & allergies

Supportive in atopic eczema, acne, psoriasis and recurring allergies – through detoxification, skin rituals and individually tailored nutrition.

Immunity & prevention

For recurring infections and general weakness – building a stable constitution via Ojas-strengthening measures and seasonal care.

Life transitions

Support during pregnancy, postpartum, midlife and retirement – carried physically and mentally through every transition.

Ayurveda does not replace conventional medical assessment of acute or serious conditions. We work in addition – and coordinate with your GP or specialist when that makes sense.

Women's Health

Ayurvedic care through every life phase.

From the first cycle through menopause: we accompany you with individually tailored treatments, routines and herbs – always in coordination with your conventional medical care.

Menstrual cycle

Brings the cycle gently into balance: for PMS, cramps, mood swings, headaches and irregular bleeding. Through adapted nutrition, daily routines and plant support.

Pregnancy

Gentle ayurvedic applications before birth: oil massages, breathing exercises and sleep support – attuned to the trimester and in line with medical care.

Postpartum & breastfeeding

Regeneration after birth with Abhyanga applications, rest rituals and herbs to support healing, stable mood and healthy digestion in the early months.

Menopause

Relieves hot flushes, sleep issues and mood swings in peri-, meno- and postmenopause – through type-appropriate nutrition, routines, herbs and nervous-system regulation.

How does a treatment work?

01

Initial consultation and history

90 minutes. We take time for your full story: current complaints, life circumstances, diet, sleep, stress, pre-existing conditions, previous treatments. This thorough anamnesis is the foundation of every ayurvedic diagnosis.

02

Constitutional assessment

Pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), tongue diagnosis, eye and skin observation, attention to speech and movement. From this we derive your basic constitution and current shift (Vikriti).

03

Treatment plan

Individual recommendations on nutrition (constitution-appropriate, suited to everyday life), lifestyle (sleep, movement, breath), and – where indicated – herbal remedies and external applications. We discuss openly what works, what requires patience, and what does not help.

04

Accompaniment and follow-up sessions

Usually 3 to 6 appointments in the first months, then seasonal or situational follow-up. We adapt step by step to your experience and changes.

Consultations

Three paths of ayurvedic consultation.

Every consultation begins with a thorough constitutional assessment – the depth and focus of follow-up sessions adapts to your concern.

Medical consultation

Individual ayurvedic diagnosis with a tailored treatment plan – for specific complaints, chronic imbalances and long-term wellbeing. Integrates pulse diagnosis, history and phytotherapy.

Nutritional counselling

Type- and season-appropriate nutrition to strengthen digestion, energy and the immune system. Concrete advice for your daily life – no dogmatic bans, focused on what you can actually implement.

Lifestyle counselling

Daily and seasonal routines (Dinacharya, Ritucharya), self-care and mind-body practices for more balance, resilience and sleep quality.

Which applications are used?

Applications are never an end in themselves – always part of a plan. We choose them where they fit the complaint and the constitution:

  • Abhyanga – harmonising full- or partial-body oil massage; soothes the nervous system, supports detoxification and strengthens immunity.
  • Shirodhara – gentle, warm oil forehead pouring for deep relaxation and regeneration of the nervous system; used for inner restlessness, sleep disturbance and mental exhaustion.
  • Udvartana – invigorating herbal-powder massage to reduce cellulite, activate the lymphatic system and stimulate metabolism.
  • Marma therapy – targeted activation of the energy points (Marmas) to release deep tension and blockages; subtle manual work on a physical-energetic level.
  • Pinda Sveda – herbal stamp treatment for tension, rheumatic complaints and chronic pain.
  • Nasya – gentle application in the forehead and nasal area, helpful for sinusitis, headaches and allergies.
  • Plant therapy – single herbs and classical formulations, sourced from certified Swiss and EU pharmacies.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Ayurveda.

I'm not sure where to start – what can I do?+
Book a free 15-minute orientation call – by phone or in person. We listen briefly, answer your open questions and find together which path (consultation, treatment or a combination) is the right one for you. No pressure, no commitment.
Is Ayurveda covered by health insurance?+
Usually via supplementary insurance (complementary medicine), as our therapists are EMR or ASCA registered. Which applications and what share are covered depends on your individual policy. We are happy to help you clarify this with your insurer.
Do I need a referral?+
No. You can book an appointment directly. For ongoing conventional treatments or diagnoses, please bring current reports and a list of your medications – this helps us assess you comprehensively.
How many appointments are needed?+
This depends on your complaint and constitution. A typical course includes 3–6 appointments in the first months, followed by seasonal follow-ups 2–4 times a year. For chronic topics, patience is key – Ayurveda works at the level of lifestyle, not quick symptom suppression.
Can I use Ayurveda alongside conventional medicine?+
Absolutely – that is our understanding. We coordinate with your GP or specialist on request. For potential interactions with medications, we check carefully what works together.
Are the herbal remedies safe?+
We source exclusively from certified Swiss or EU pharmacies with documented quality assurance (GMP). No grey-market imports, no questionable supply chains, no heavy-metal risks. During pregnancy, breastfeeding or with existing medications we discuss the selection carefully.
What about Panchakarma – do I need it?+
Panchakarma is the classical ayurvedic detox cure. In our practice we offer ambulatory short forms that integrate into your daily life – not everyone needs it, and not every constitution tolerates it well. We assess the indication carefully and individually.
What should I bring to the first session?+
Current medical reports (if available), a list of your medications and supplements, comfortable clothing, your insurance card. Ideally do not come on a completely full stomach.
Is Ayurveda the same as Yoga?+
No, but the two systems share a philosophical root and complement each other. Yoga is a practice – Ayurveda is medicine. In our treatments we often recommend suitable yoga or breathing exercises; the practice itself can take place through the Sanapurna Yoga & Studio (separate site).
