Natural Medicine TEN – the healing tradition of Europe.

Traditional European Natural Medicine draws on more than two thousand years of medical knowledge – from Hippocrates through Galen and Paracelsus to today. Constitution-based diagnostics, phytotherapy, eliminative procedures and nutrition in one coherent system.

"Nature cures, medicine cares – nature heals, the physician accompanies."

What is Natural Medicine TEN?

TEN stands for Traditional European Natural Medicine – a self-contained medical system whose roots lie in ancient Greek medicine, refined through medieval and monastic medicine into the modern Swiss naturopathic practice. Unlike most complementary medicine methods, TEN is not an imported tradition: it is Europe's own native medicine.

At its core, TEN works with a constitution-based view of health. Each person is seen in their individual balance – physically, emotionally and within their environment. Complaints arise when this balance is disturbed; healing means supporting the body's own regulating force.

The four elements and the humoral doctrine

The diagnostic foundation of TEN is the humoral doctrine according to Hippocrates and Galen. It describes four bodily humors in dynamic balance:

  • Blood (sanguis) – stands for warmth and moisture, the sanguine temperament.
  • Yellow bile (cholera) – stands for warmth and dryness, the choleric temperament.
  • Black bile (melancholia) – stands for cold and dryness, the melancholic temperament.
  • Phlegm (phlegma) – stands for cold and moisture, the phlegmatic temperament.

The mixture of these four humors defines your personal constitution. When illness strikes, the balance shifts – treatment aims to clarify, nourish or carefully eliminate the disturbed humor.

Five pillars of therapy

  • Phytotherapy – native and European medicinal plants as tea, tincture, ointment or extract.
  • Nutrition & daily order – constitution-appropriate, seasonal, suited to daily life.
  • Eliminative procedures – cupping, bloodletting, Baunscheidt therapy and other classical methods that stimulate metabolism.
  • Hydrotherapy – water applications after Kneipp, wraps, compresses and baths.
  • Breath & movement – simple exercises to regulate the autonomic nervous system.

EMR recognition

Natural Medicine TEN is registered in Switzerland with the Erfahrungsmedizinisches Register (EMR) as a recognized complementary medicine method. Treatments by an EMR-recognized therapist are covered by many health insurers via supplementary insurance (complementary medicine). Combined with the federal higher professional examination in naturopathy, TEN is one of the most thoroughly recognized methods in Switzerland.

Indications

What is Natural Medicine TEN used for?

Digestion & metabolism

Help with bloating, constipation, irritable bowel and digestive complaints through strengthening digestion and optimising metabolism.

Hormonal balance

Support with PMS, cycle disorders, menopause and thyroid topics through individually tailored nutrition, herbal medicine and lifestyle adaptations.

Back, neck & joint pain

Natural relief from tension, inflammation and chronic pain through manual therapies, cupping and traditional methods.

Sleep disorders

Support for trouble falling asleep and unrestful sleep through calming applications, herbal remedies and regulation of natural rhythms.

Mental & emotional health

Accompaniment with anxiety, low mood and overwhelm through resilience-building and holistic support of the nervous system.

Skin & allergies

Immunity & prevention

For recurring infections and weakened defences – building a stable constitution through seasonal herbal medicine and daily order.

Chronic conditions

Natural Medicine TEN does not replace conventional medical assessment. We work in addition – and coordinate with your GP or specialist when that makes sense.

How we accompany you

What to expect with us.

Comprehensive health analysis

Pulse, tongue and iris diagnostics combined with history and – where available – your lab values. We take time for the whole picture.

Individually tailored plan

A bespoke combination of phytotherapy, nutrition, hydrotherapy, cupping and – where indicated – leech therapy. Concrete and suitable for daily life.

Regular follow-ups

Seasonal and situational accompaniment for continuous adjustment of your plan. TEN follows the rhythm of the seasons – your treatment does too.

How does a treatment work?

01

Initial consultation and history

90 minutes. We take time for your whole story: current complaints, pre-existing conditions, life situation, diet, sleep, previous treatments. A careful anamnesis is the foundation of every TEN diagnosis.

02

Constitutional diagnostics

Pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, facial and iris diagnosis, observation of stature, skin and metabolic signs. From this we derive your constitutional foundation and the current shift of the humors.

03

Treatment plan

Individual recommendations on nutrition and daily order, selected medicinal plants and, where indicated, eliminative procedures. We openly discuss what works, what requires patience and where a conventional medical assessment makes sense.

04

Accompaniment and follow-up sessions

Usually 3 to 6 appointments in the first months, followed by seasonal follow-up – TEN works with the rhythms of the seasons and adapts treatment and plants accordingly.

Which methods are used?

Methods are never an end in themselves – always part of a constitutional plan. We choose them carefully according to complaint and constitution:

  • Phytotherapy – European medicinal plants as tea mixtures, tinctures, ointments or plant extracts. From certified Swiss and EU pharmacies.
  • Cupping – dry and wet cupping to release tension, stimulate lymphatic flow and eliminate metabolic by-products.
  • Baunscheidt therapy – gentle skin-stimulus procedure to activate local circulation and self-healing.
  • Bloodletting – a classical procedure used very specifically and only when clearly indicated (e.g. high iron stores).
  • Kneipp hydrotherapy – wraps, compresses, water treading, pouring procedures. Simple, everyday applications you can continue at home.
  • Nutrition counselling – on constitutional criteria, related to the four qualities warm/cold/moist/dry.
  • Breath and movement recommendations – simple exercises to strengthen the autonomic nervous system.
Note on the relationship with Ayurveda: TEN and Ayurveda share many conceptual roots – constitutional doctrine, elemental thinking, the link between nutrition and healing. A therapist trained in both can choose the more fitting tool for each patient or combine the two systems.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Natural Medicine TEN.

I'm not sure where to start – what can I do?+
Book a free 15-minute orientation call – by phone or in person. We listen briefly, answer your open questions and find together whether TEN is the right system for your concern. No pressure, no commitment.
Is Natural Medicine TEN covered by health insurance?+
Usually via supplementary insurance (complementary medicine), as our therapist is registered with EMR and ASCA. Which share and how many sessions per year are covered depends on your policy.
Do I need a referral?+
No. You can book an appointment directly. For ongoing conventional treatments, please bring current reports and a list of your medications.
How many appointments are needed?+
This depends on the complaint and the constitution. A typical course includes 3–6 appointments in the first months, followed by seasonal follow-ups 2–4 times a year.
What is the difference from Ayurveda?+
Both share many core ideas. Ayurveda comes from India with Indian medicinal plants; TEN is the independent European tradition with native plants and familiar terms. We can choose the more fitting system per patient – or combine both.
What is the difference from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?+
TCM and TEN share many core ideas. The difference lies in cultural roots, medicinal plants and the specific diagnostic and therapeutic methods. TEN uses European plants and concepts that integrate more naturally into everyday Swiss life.
Are the herbal remedies safe?+
We source exclusively from certified Swiss or EU pharmacies with documented quality assurance (GMP). During pregnancy, breastfeeding or with existing medication we discuss the selection carefully and check for interactions.
Does cupping or bloodletting hurt?+
Cupping is usually not painful – some spots may be briefly sensitive but the effect subsides quickly. Bloodletting is used very specifically with clear indication; the brief puncture is comparable to a blood donation.
What should I bring to the first session?+
Current medical reports (if available), a list of your medications and supplements, comfortable clothing, your insurance card.
